STATEMENT/BIO

ABOUT
I have been making photographs concerning Viet Nam for over twenty-five years. The first photographs I made there was with a small Japanese rangefinder, carried while a soldier in America's war against Viet Nam.

Since the 1970's, most of my photographs have been contained in series form. The first of the Viet Nam series titled WAR STORY, are portraits made of Viet Nam veterans. Under each veteran' s image is their handwritten statement about "Viet Nam." The portraits and intimate statements testify to varied emotions and complex nature of the participants feelings about their relationship to that war.

Returning to Viet Nam in 1992 for the first time since the end of the war with an old Nikon and a hundred rolls of black and white film, I began documenting Viet Nam, with the intent of seeing a place I had only known during war time. In 2009, SPRING VISITS: Photographs From Viet Nam was published.

In 2010, coinciding with the 1000 year anniversary of Hanoi, I began making HANOI STREET WORK. Using color film and working with a long-time Vietnamese friend, I chose to document primarily street vendors who sell the products consumed daily in Hanoi. With the decision to photograph them as they stand, facing the camera, I hope to provide these anonymous, courageous and proudly patriotic workers a moment of respect and dignity.
